Spiral Wound Gaskets and Other Metal Gasket Types

Selecting the design and filler for operating conditions

Our range includes spiral wound, high-temperature, metal jacketed and kammprofile gaskets, RTJ rings, corrugated metal gaskets, metal-edged gaskets and heat exchanger gaskets. We select the type, material and filler for the medium, temperature, pressure and joint design.

arrows

Spiral wound gaskets consist of a V-shaped metal strip wound spirally with filler between the turns. The design provides resilience and maintains the seal under pressure fluctuations.

Design types: MS10 (without a guide ring or inner ring), MS12 (with an inner ring), MS14 (with an outer ring), MS16 (with inner and outer rings), and MS10T (without a guide ring or inner ring, with a PTFE sealing zone, up to +250°C).

Spiral strip materials: SS304 (standard), SS316L (chemical applications and chloride media), Inconel 600 (high temperatures, made to order). Fillers: graphite (up to +550°C, the standard filler for steam), PTFE (chemical applications, acids/alkalis) and mica (filler for the highest temperatures, limited by the strip material).

Types of spiral wound gaskets

Standard designs:

  • MS10: without a guide ring or inner ring.
  • MS12: with an inner ring.
  • MS14: with an outer ring.
  • MS16: with inner and outer rings.
  • MS10T: without a guide ring or inner ring, with a PTFE sealing zone, up to +250°C.

Selection by pressure and temperature

Filler material selection:

  • up to +250°C, chemical applications → PTFE filler (acids, alkalis), limited by the MS10T design
  • up to +550°C, steam → graphite filler
  • highest temperatures → mica filler, limited by the strip material

Maximum operating pressure for MS10-MS16 types: 400 bar.

Spiral strip material selection:

  • SS304: standard, up to +425°C, oils, water and steam
  • SS316L: dilute acids, seawater, up to +550°C
  • Inconel 600: high temperatures (up to +600°C), made to order

Spiral wound gaskets – standards and dimensions

We supply spiral wound gaskets manufactured to the following standards:

  • ASME B16.20: metal gaskets for pipe flanges, including spiral wound gaskets and RTJ rings
  • EN 1514-2: spiral wound gaskets for EN 1092-1 flanges
  • BS standards: British standards; dimensions are agreed at the enquiry stage

Dimensions: DN 10-1000 to EN 1514-2, inside diameters of 10-3000 mm in standard production, and NPS 1/2-60 to ASME B16.20 for B16.5 and B16.47 flanges. Non-standard dimensions are available from the manufacturer to order.

Standard nominal thicknesses are 3.2, 4.5 and 6.5 mm. The range depends on the type; for MS10T, the DONIT catalogue gives 3.2-4.5 mm.

High-temperature gaskets

High-temperature gaskets are designed for equipment and systems in which the seal must retain its properties at elevated or very high temperatures.

Depending on the operating parameters, graphite- or mica-based materials and special semi-metallic and metal designs are used. The DONIT range includes materials from the MICALIT® family, made from phlogopite mica. Designs reinforced with a stainless steel insert are also available.

Selection takes into account not only the maximum temperature but also the pressure, medium and joint design.

Metal jacketed gaskets

Metal jacketed gaskets consist of a soft sealing material partially or fully enclosed in a metal jacket. Flexible graphite may be used as the standard filler.

The jacket may be made of carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, brass or special alloys. Example stainless steel grades include 1.4541, 1.4571 and 1.4404.

Applications: chemical processing, petrochemicals, refining, the gas industry and industrial valves.

Corrugated metal gaskets

Corrugated metal gaskets have a profiled metal core. Depending on the design, they may have additional sealing layers, for example graphite or PTFE. Non-standard versions are made from a drawing.

RTJ ring-type gaskets

An RTJ is a separate machined metal ring, not a spiral wound gasket. The basic designs are R Oval, R Octagonal, RX and BX. RTJ gaskets are manufactured to API 6A and ASME B16.20 requirements.

Example materials: soft iron, low carbon steel, F5, AISI 410, AISI 304, AISI 316 and AISI 347.

Flat gaskets with metal edging

We assess the feasibility of a metal-edged component individually, in accordance with the customer’s specification. The base material may come from the TESNIT and GRAFILIT families. The metal edging protects and reinforces the most heavily loaded edge of the gasket.

We select the core and edging materials with the temperature, pressure and medium in mind. See also flat gaskets.

Kammprofile gaskets

A kammprofile gasket has a profiled metal core with concentric grooves and soft sealing layers, for example graphite or PTFE. Versions without facings are also available.

Kammprofile gaskets are selected for applications including flange connections, heat exchangers, reactors, and damaged or uneven flange faces.

Heat exchanger gaskets

Heat exchangers use spiral wound and metal jacketed gaskets, among others, as well as designs with one or more partition bars. Selection requires information about the equipment design, partition arrangement, medium, temperature and operating pressure.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Anbi-Tech as a reliable and professional partner in machining and in manufacturing parts for the pharmaceutical industry. This is the third company where I have had the pleasure of working with Anbi-Tech, and the cooperation has been of the highest standard every time.

The pharmaceutical industry is exceptionally demanding: precision, on-time delivery, material quality and a full understanding of the customer’s needs all matter. Anbi-Tech has repeatedly proved that it is very well suited to this environment. The company has manufactured change parts, spare parts, filling needles, conveyor screws, components for dispensing powders and liquids, and many other production components for us.

The quality of the parts deserves particular recognition, whether they are made from 316L and 304 stainless steel or plastics such as POM, polyurethane and polycarbonate. The components are manufactured to a very high standard, with close attention to accuracy and detail, which is crucial in our industry.

Anbi-Tech has literally ‘saved our skin’ on many occasions in emergencies where time, a rapid response and a flexible approach to the customer mattered. A major strength of the company is its modern machinery, which enables it to complete even highly demanding projects while maintaining the highest standard of workmanship.

The people are equally important: the company’s staff always show complete commitment and a willingness to cooperate and provide technical support. Their extensive experience, professionalism and collaborative approach to customers are clear to see.

In pharmaceuticals, the ‘paperwork’, meaning certificates, is also important. The certificates have never been questioned during customer or regulatory audits, for example by GIF.

I strongly recommend working with Anbi-Tech to any company looking for a proven, reliable and quality-focused technical partner.

Dariusz Stachowicz, Senior Maintenance Manager, Polfa Warszawa S.A.

We had a very good experience working with Anbi-Tech on a new production line project for a bottling plant. Using a bottle sample and components from the old line, its engineer prepared the design and documentation for new change parts in SolidWorks. Anbi-Tech then manufactured timing screws, star wheels, drive components, bottle orienters, bottle turners and feeding components, among other items.

A major advantage is the end-to-end approach, from analysis and design through to the manufacture of finished components. Their considerable technical experience, precision and ability to solve unusual problems are clear. I recommend them.

Bartłomiej Ć, Specialist, ORLEN

We work with Anbi-Tech to manufacture parts and technical components for our projects. We value them above all for their workmanship, on-time delivery and excellent communication. When requirements are unusual, they can advise us and find a solution instead of simply manufacturing a part from a drawing. A reliable partner that I am happy to recommend.

Marek P., Production Manager, Triccor

A reliable company with extensive experience! They manufacture parts from steel, aluminium and specialist plastics such as POM and PTFE. Every service, whether turning, milling or CNC cutting, is carried out perfectly and with attention to the smallest detail. Excellent communication, professional advice and consistently on-time delivery. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who needs reliable components.

For a quotation, send a PDF or DXF drawing or a STEP model with dimensions. State the material, the number of pieces and the quality requirements. A photograph of the part alone, without dimensions, does not allow a reliable quotation to be prepared.

If the project combines several operations, we will agree the scope of machining, inspection, assembly and processes carried out by partners.
