Gasket Selection Guide: Medium, Temperature and Pressure

Process medium, temperature and pressure as starting points

Compare fibre, graphite, PTFE, rubber, spiral-wound and metal-clad materials. Select the dimension to the flange standard and confirm certificates for the specific grade.

arrows

Five data points needed to select a gasket

Installation data What to provide Why it affects selection
Process medium Medium name, concentration and any contaminants Materials differ in chemical resistance
Temperature Minimum, continuous operating and short-term temperatures Temperature changes the durability of the material and joint
Pressure Operating pressure, surges and flange class It affects gasket design and loading
Joint Standard, DN and PN or NPS and class, dimensions and surface condition It determines gasket geometry and the correct gasket dimension
Documentation Required approvals, certificates and inspection document An approval applies to a specific grade, not a whole material family

One piece of information, such as temperature alone or PN class alone, is not enough for safe selection.

Gasket selection starts with 5 questions: 1) What medium (water, oil, fuel, acid, steam)? 2) What operating temperature? 3) What pressure? 4) What flange (DIN/ASME, DN, PN)? 5) Are industry certificates required (DVGW, TA-Luft, KTW)?

After defining the medium and temperature, we select a gasket material: non-metallic fibre, graphite, PTFE, rubber, spiral-wound or metal-clad. Parameters are selected for the specific grade and application.

After selecting the material, we choose gasket dimensions to the flange standard (DIN EN 1514-1 or ASME B16.21) and thickness from the catalogue thicknesses for the selected sheet grade, usually from 0.5 to 3 mm. For critical applications with elevated pressure and temperature, we use MS spiral-wound gaskets or RTJ rings.

Step 1: Define the medium

Material selection by chemical medium:

  • Water, steam → EPDM, Grafilit or Donit BA-CF
  • Engine oil, fuel → NBR, Viton or Donit BA-202
  • Concentrated acids (HCl, H2SO4) → Doniflon PTFE, Viton FKM
  • Alkalis (NaOH, KOH) → EPDM or PTFE
  • Organic solvents → PTFE or Viton
  • Technical gases → Donit BA-CF with a DVGW certificate. For oxygen, we select a sheet with BAM (Oxygen) approval, for example Tesnit BA-55, BA-U or Grafilit
  • Superheated steam → MICALIT, MS spiral-wound gaskets

Step 2: Define the temperature

Selection by temperature range:

  • -40°C to +100°C → EPDM and NBR rubber, with NBR operating from -30°C and EPDM up to +120°C
  • up to +200°C → Donit BA-CF, Gambit AF. We determine the range for Viton FKM from the datasheet for the specific grade.
  • BA-202 → up to +140°C in continuous service, with steam up to +120°C, and momentarily up to +180°C
  • up to +550°C → Grafilit, Sigraflex (expanded graphite)
  • up to +950°C → MICALIT, which is mica with an AISI 316L stainless-steel insert
  • RTJ metal rings → the temperature limit depends on ring material, medium, pressure and flange standard
  • up to +550°C → MS spiral-wound gaskets with graphite filler

Step 3: Materials table

Donit Tesnit BA / Gambit AF sheets

Fibres + elastomer. Parameters depend on the sheet grade, for example Gambit AF-300 up to 320°C and 10 bar, Gambit AF-1000 up to 420°C and 12 bar, Tesnit BA-50 up to 280°C and 80 bar, Tesnit BA-GL up to 440°C and 120 bar. Applications depend on grade; selected sheets are intended for water, gas, oils or fuels. DVGW or TA-Luft are available only for selected grades and must be confirmed before ordering.

Grafilit / Sigraflex graphite sheets

Expanded graphite. Up to +550°C, pressure depending on grade: Grafilit SF up to 80 bar, SL up to 100 bar, SP up to 200 bar. Steam, oils and gases. Not resistant to strongly oxidising substances such as nitric acid and chromic acid. DVGW or TA-Luft are available for selected grades and must be confirmed before ordering.

Doniflon 900E / PTFE sheet

Pure expanded PTFE. -240°C to +260°C. Selection for a PN class requires checking the specific material, flange, temperature, medium and load. Chemistry: acids, alkalis and solvents. The exceptions are liquid alkali metals and gaseous fluorine. The Doniflon 900E datasheet confirms physiological safety and purity of flowing products. For food or pharmaceutical applications, confirm the current documentation for the selected grade.

MICALIT / MS spiral-wound gaskets

Mica with an AISI 316L stainless-steel insert and spiral-wound metal-clad gaskets. MICALIT up to +950°C and a maximum pressure of 40 bar; MS spiral-wound gaskets with graphite filler up to +550°C. Furnaces, superheated steam and high temperatures.

Step 4: Select the dimension

Gasket dimensions by standard:

  • DIN EN 1514-1 (DIN/EN flanges up to PN 63): DN 10-1500
  • ASME B16.21 standard (non-metallic flat gaskets for ASME/ANSI flanges): NPS 1/2-60
  • DIN 2690-2692 standards: withdrawn standards, replaced by EN 1514-1
  • ISO 7483: gasket dimensions for flanges to ISO 7005, irrespective of material
Check dimensions

Step 5: Certificates

Industry certificates for gaskets are available for selected sheets at the customer’s request:

  • Drinking water → KTW (Germany), DVGW
  • Gas → DVGW (natural gas)
  • Fugitive emissions (TA-Luft) → leak-tightness confirmation to VDI 2440
  • Material certificate → EN 10204 3.1 inspection document available for a fee on request

A full list of certificates by sheet is available on request. Ask for a certificate and its price no later than when placing the order, and we confirm its issue separately.

Frequently asked questions about gasket selection

The choice depends on medium, temperature, pressure, flange type and required approvals. Do not assign one temperature or one pressure to an entire sheet family. For BA-CF, the pressure range is up to 12 MPa; check all other parameters in the datasheet of the specific grade. Graphite is selected using the same operating data.

Not always. A spiral-wound gasket is selected for joints operating at elevated temperature and pressure, especially when conditions change cyclically. A flat gasket may be correct under stable conditions. Selection depends on the specific installation parameters, flange material and required approvals.

PN 40 class alone does not determine one correct thickness. The specific material grade, flange dimensions and surface condition, and operating conditions must be considered. Choose thickness from the catalogue values for the selected sheet grade and check it against the correct flange standard. Without this information, one value should not be specified.

Suitability for oxygen cannot be confirmed from the PTFE or Donit family name alone. For the specific material and operating conditions, check an oxygen approval, for example BAM (Oxygen), and the manufacturer’s datasheet. Each such application must be verified individually before selection.

TA-Luft concerns limiting fugitive emissions from installations. When selecting a gasket, the material-family name is not enough. Confirm that the specific grade has the required test or approval for the installation conditions. State the requirement in the quotation enquiry.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Anbi-Tech as a reliable and professional partner in machining and in manufacturing parts for the pharmaceutical industry. This is the third company where I have had the pleasure of working with Anbi-Tech, and the cooperation has been of the highest standard every time.

The pharmaceutical industry is exceptionally demanding: precision, on-time delivery, material quality and a full understanding of the customer’s needs all matter. Anbi-Tech has repeatedly proved that it is very well suited to this environment. The company has manufactured change parts, spare parts, filling needles, conveyor screws, components for dispensing powders and liquids, and many other production components for us.

The quality of the parts deserves particular recognition, whether they are made from 316L and 304 stainless steel or plastics such as POM, polyurethane and polycarbonate. The components are manufactured to a very high standard, with close attention to accuracy and detail, which is crucial in our industry.

Anbi-Tech has literally ‘saved our skin’ on many occasions in emergencies where time, a rapid response and a flexible approach to the customer mattered. A major strength of the company is its modern machinery, which enables it to complete even highly demanding projects while maintaining the highest standard of workmanship.

The people are equally important: the company’s staff always show complete commitment and a willingness to cooperate and provide technical support. Their extensive experience, professionalism and collaborative approach to customers are clear to see.

In pharmaceuticals, the ‘paperwork’, meaning certificates, is also important. The certificates have never been questioned during customer or regulatory audits, for example by GIF.

I strongly recommend working with Anbi-Tech to any company looking for a proven, reliable and quality-focused technical partner.

Dariusz Stachowicz, Senior Maintenance Manager, Polfa Warszawa S.A.

We had a very good experience working with Anbi-Tech on a new production line project for a bottling plant. Using a bottle sample and components from the old line, its engineer prepared the design and documentation for new change parts in SolidWorks. Anbi-Tech then manufactured timing screws, star wheels, drive components, bottle orienters, bottle turners and feeding components, among other items.

A major advantage is the end-to-end approach, from analysis and design through to the manufacture of finished components. Their considerable technical experience, precision and ability to solve unusual problems are clear. I recommend them.

Bartłomiej Ć, Specialist, ORLEN

We work with Anbi-Tech to manufacture parts and technical components for our projects. We value them above all for their workmanship, on-time delivery and excellent communication. When requirements are unusual, they can advise us and find a solution instead of simply manufacturing a part from a drawing. A reliable partner that I am happy to recommend.

Marek P., Production Manager, Triccor

A reliable company with extensive experience! They manufacture parts from steel, aluminium and specialist plastics such as POM and PTFE. Every service, whether turning, milling or CNC cutting, is carried out perfectly and with attention to the smallest detail. Excellent communication, professional advice and consistently on-time delivery. I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who needs reliable components.

For a quotation, send a PDF or DXF drawing or a STEP model with dimensions. State the material, the number of pieces and the quality requirements. A photograph of the part alone, without dimensions, does not allow a reliable quotation to be prepared.

If the project combines several operations, we will agree the scope of machining, inspection, assembly and processes carried out by partners.
