Polyurethane, abbreviated to PUR, is a polymer produced by combining diisocyanates and polyols. The name covers hundreds of grades, each made in a slightly different way, so the properties of the finished product depend on its formulation rather than the material name alone. An order must therefore specify the material form, technical requirements and the component’s operating environment.
There is no single short list. Hundreds of polyurethane grades are available, differentiated by their raw materials and manufacturing process. The same name covers soft flexible foams, rigid foams with good insulation properties and solid technical components resistant to wear. The word polyurethane alone is therefore not enough for an order. The material form and component operating conditions must also be specified.
Polyurethane does not have a single list of disadvantages because the name covers hundreds of grades, each with different behaviour. For example, prolonged exposure to hot water or moisture can cause hydrolysis and loss of mechanical properties in thermoplastic polyester polyurethanes, while polyether grades are much more resistant. This applies to thermoplastic polyurethanes, not the entire family, so suitability depends on the specific formulation and operating conditions.
